History of the Chihuahua
Nobody knows exactly where the Chihuahua first came from, although many history experts believe they were first found in Mexico. Others think they might have come from Malta, an island in the Mediterranean Sea.
However, a dog toy on wheels from Tres Zapotes in Mexico, which dates back to the year 100, proves that the Chihuahua was in Mexico 1,400 years before the first Europeans arrived there.
They don't grow very high
Usually the height of a Chihuahua is between 15 and 25 cm, but some of them grow as tall as 38 cm. That is not much taller than a ruler!
There are strict rules you have to follow if you want to have a proper Chihuahua as a pet. These rules are called 'breed standards'. One of the rules is that a Chihuahua cannot weigh more than 2.5kg.
There are two types of Chihuahua - the long coat and the smooth coat. The dogs are quite colourful and can have lots of different colours on their coats.
