If you are looking to upgrade your phone, then the new Sony Xperia neo L presents a fun and affordable option.

The Xperia neo L may not stand up to the latest high-end models, which feature faster processors, bigger displays, and speedier network connections, but at only half the price, there's plenty to be positive about.

Inside the neo L is a Qualcomm processor running at 1GHz, a 4-inch display with 854 x 450 pixels, and the latest Android 4.0 operating system. It also looks pretty cool, with a trim around its big screen, and comes with a decent 5-megapixel digital camera on the back.

On the other hand, there are some pretty obvious compromises. There include the limitation on network data speeds to 7.2 Mbps, compared with other HSPA models capable of up to 42Mbps connections - not to mention LTE models that go as fast as 100Mbps.

Memory is limited to 1GB of read-only memory (ROM) and 512MB of random-access memory (RAM), which will fill up quickly if you try new applications, or have lots of contacts and saved messages. It is expandable with a microSD card slot, but many apps keep data on the phone, so it can still be an issue.

What it doesn't lack is any of the basic functions, such as Wi-fi and Bluetooth, audio recording and GPS.
