Father chopped son after argument

A construction worker who chopped his 18-year-old son in the head after an argument about the volume of a TV admitted wounding with intent.

The District Court heard that Chan Sui, 57, attacked his son, Chan Ngok-kui, at their home in Sha Kok Estate, Sha Tin, on May 16. He said he became frustrated because the boy spent his time playing video games rather than getting a job or studying.

Kwok Wing-lung, for the prosecution, said that on the night of the incident, Chan Sui was sleeping in a bedroom. His younger son, 10, turned down the volume of the television, which annoyed his elder brother. They started to fight.

Chan Sui came out of the room and hit his elder son. When the teenager told him not to do so, he became angry and grabbed a chopper from the kitchen. The eldest son attempted to defend himself with an iron rod, but Chan Sui managed to chop him on his forehead.

Kwok said Chan Ngok-kui suffered a cut to his forehead and a cut to his left cheek, and needed stitches.

Tong Yee-chuen, for Chan Sui, said his client had got fed up with the teenager's behaviour.

'Despite [Chan Sui's] advice to either find work or study, he [the son] refused,' Tong said. 'Instead, he killed time playing computer games or by doing nothing.'

Judge Garry Tallentire called for a background report on the defendant and adjourned the case to August 8. Chan Sui was remanded in custody.
