I REFER to Mr Ho Sin-hang's letter headlined, 'So congested' (South China Morning Post, December 16). In January, the Government commissioned a consultant to study the traffic problems in the Sha Tin and Ma On Shan areas. The consultant has completed the study on Fo Tan and has made the following recommendations to alleviate traffic problems: To construct an additional access road into Fo Tan; and, To implement appropriate traffic management measures in the Fo Tan area, for example, junction improvements, no stopping zones, one-way circulation systems, provision of lorry parking spaces and loading/unloading areas, etc.
Earlier this month, the consultant's recommendation was presented to Sha Tin District Board which is currently looking at these schemes. Implementation will be arranged as soon as agreement is reached with the District Board.
While the construction of an additional access road is a longer-term solution, some of the recommended traffic management schemes can be implemented relatively quickly to alleviate the traffic problems in Fo Tan.
Regarding illegal parking of lorries, the police have been alerted to strengthen enforcement action where appropriate.
