ANYTHING Arnie can do, we can do better. Just down the old Canton Road from Planet Hollywood sits a local version of the Hollywood-for-sale concept. It's called Star Shop and it's the result of a collaboration between local movie heavyweights Golden Harvest, Shaw Brothers, Jackie Chan and a fashion manufacturer. The shop sells movie merchandise ranging from 'official' star or movie T-shirts to sim kar collectors' cards, negatives, posters and key chains made from celluloid bloopers left on the editing room floor. Chan, who used his impressive clout to get the town's two top studios to pool their resources, pointed out that Hong Kong stars seldom patent their image, and thus get no royalties from many of the products bearing their face that are circulating in this idol-saturated market. With Star Shop, a percentage of the net profit will go to the relevant artist. Given the success of the local film and pop industries around the region, it isn't surprising to hear there are plans to sell Star Shop franchises in China, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia and Korea.
