LEGISLATORS and social workers have accused the Government of victimising the poor by demolishing illegal rooftop structures in run-down areas while ignoring similar structures on expensive properties.

They said it was unfair that some rooftop huts, though classified as illegal by the Government, were saved from clearance due to limited resources.

The criticism follows reports that illegal rooftop structures were found on top of expensive buildings where Housing Secretary Dominic Wong Shing-wah and brother of the Chief Secretary Anson Chan Fang On-sang are living.

The structures have not been cleared despite residents complaints.

The Buildings Department yesterday denied it had applied double-standards in its handling of the issue.

Director Helen Yu Lai Ching-ping said the prime concern with action against unauthorised building works was public safety.
