WINNER of this year's senior category of the RTHK/South China Morning Post short story competition, Libby-Jane van Ratingen, said recognition of her work had given her impetus to continue a budding writing career.
The ATV journalist, 26, better known to viewers as Libby-Jane Charleston, is a busy scribe in her spare time, having written poetry, a play and a collection of short stories. Ms van Ratingen is working on a novel, which she is hoping to have published.
'The competition has been great. It's very encouraging to get some sort of appreciation of your work because as a writer you are forever wondering if anybody is going to enjoy what you are writing,' she said.
Her story, titled Truth Will Out - the theme of the competition - won the journalist a S.T. Dupont Les Classiques fountain pen and her first trip to London, two return tickets courtesy of British Airways.
There were 141 entries for the senior category this year. First runner-up was Tam Pui-ying, 18, for her story, Eve of the Year. Currently studying at Harvard University, she will receive her prize, a S.T. Dupont fountain pen, at a later date.
A fountain pen also went to the second runner-up, Nick Spencer, 47, the Jockey Club training and development manager.
