THOSE who think that young people in Hong Kong only know what they are taught in textbooks and chase their pop idols should have visited the Art and Craft Contest and Exhibition, which showcased local talent.
Organised by the Hong Kong Teachers' Association and Sing Tao Daily , the exhibition was open to secondary and primary school students and required entrants to express their creativity and artistic skills through Chinese and Western paintings and crafts.
There was no restriction on the themes or material of the students' work and freedom of expression was encouraged.
'We decided not to set a theme to limit the students' thoughts so that they could fully demonstrate their creative mind in their work,' said Hong Kong Teachers' Association vice-president Leung Shiu-chuen.
A total of 2,146 entries were received for different categories and the winners' works were displayed at Kwang Hwa Information and Culture Centre.
Chung Sze-ling and Wong Nga-ching of Kit Sam Secondary School won the junior secondary craft category with their impressive paper clock.
'We created a clock to remind ourselves time is precious and slips away easily,' said the two girls, who received the school art exhibition award earlier with their timepiece.
