Asians make up the bulk
ASIAN students are the main recipients of Japanese government scholarships, taking up about 70 per cent of assistance offered, according to the Japanese Ministry of Education, Science and Culture. (The figure reflects the most recent survey, conducted two years ago.) However, many such scholarships cover only part of the student's education, and living and other expenses must be applied for in Japan.
The main scholarship recipients are students and research students at university level or above, who receive an average stipend of about HK$5,165 a month.
There are a few scholarships for students at special training schools (vocational/technical education) and at Japanese language institutes.
Economic assistance for students can come through various means - through reduction or waiving of tuition fees and scholarships.
The latter include Japanese government (the Monbusho) scholarships, local government scholarships, honours scholarships for privately-financed foreign students; Japanese private foundation scholarships, and educational institution scholarships.
The Monbusho (the Japanese Government's Ministry of Education, Science and Culture) offers six types of scholarships for foreign students.
