CHIEF Justice Sir Ti Liang Yang, who chairs a committee choosing the next Hong Kong University head, has been accused of failing to keep students informed.

The Hong Kong University Students' Union yesterday issued an open letter, asking him to explain his 'failure to keep his promise' to meet students.

Union president Tang King-loy said all they knew was that three candidates had been shortlisted for the post of vice-chancellor to replace Professor Wang Gungwu.

He plans to retire this summer.

'We do not even know the nationalities and qualifications of the candidates. They [the selection committee] do not respect the students,' Mr Tang said.

Committee secretary Jean Richards told students it seemed to her and Sir Ti Liang that it was not worth meeting students at this point, because they had been given notes of the selection committee meetings.
