LRT train derailed by vandals

VANDALS caused a rush-hour derailment of a Yuen Long-bound Light Rail Transit (LRT) train yesterday, investigators believe.

A Route 610 train, travelling from Tuen Mun with more than 100 passengers, was derailed at the junction of Tin King and Ming Kum roads at 6.26 pm.

LRT spokesman Esme Lau said an initial report had found the derailment was caused by failure of a mechanical device at the intersection.

'The point was damaged deliberately,' Ms Lau said.

Although the derailed train was put right quickly after the incident, three other trains had to be re-routed. Eight feeder buses were brought in to help commuters.

Investigations were continuing and normal LRT services would resume today, Ms Lau said.

She said it was the first such derailment. The company had not received any threats or warning.
