LAVENDER Patten was out on the streets of Central yesterday urging Hong Kongers once again to back one of her favourite charities - Helping Hand. Mrs Patten, the organisation's patron, was kicking off the annual Cookie Campaign - which aims to raise more than $5 million by selling 165,000 Lai See cookies at $30 each. The cash will be used to fund Helping Hand old folks homes throughout the territory. And as she worked her way round The Landmark, Mrs Patten said she was delighted at how the fund-raising was going. 'We need to get the message out,' she said. 'The response from the public is excellent, and I think it's because people know what a good job will be done.' The organisation was set up in 1978 in response to the plight of 100 elderly men who were found to be living in squalid bed spaces in Tsuen Wan.
