Kei Long College 8 Fung Yau Street South Yuen Long, New Territories  STUDENTS from the New Territories were more receptive to new teaching ideas compared with their city counterparts, the principal of Kei Long College said.

  Situated on the fringe of Yuen Long, the college is largely filled with students from regional districts such as Yuen Long and Tuen Mun.

  Chan Kit-ching, the new principal of the college, said although students in the district had a relatively unsound academic background, their learning attitude was better.

   'I taught in an urban school for 10 years and my impression [after assuming principal of the college] is that the students here are very pure and obedient even though they fall short in their lack of exposure to the society and their surroundings,' Ms Chan said.

  'That prompted us to organise as many visits and extra-curricular activities as possible.'   The college, which advocates Christian teaching, has adopted the spirit of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme in a bid to promote all-rounded education.

  'The Kei Long Student Award Scheme is one of our measures to share the school's direction of 'appreciation, support and encouragement' among teachers and students,' the principal said.

 'Students earn their credits from their involvement in social services, religion, extra-curricular activities and from good results in their studies.'   Last year, 23 students earned the bronze award; four won the silver award and one won the gold award.

  The college is also proud of its 'demerit-erasing' programme under which students with bad discipline records could get their wrongdoings erased.

  'Last year, 147 out of 162 participants in the programme successfully erased part or all of their bad discipline records by remaining 'clean' for three months after breaking school rules,' the principal said.

  'That programme is a measure for us to show appreciation of the effort that students put into getting back on track.

  'The programme also helps them build up confidence and a sense of achievement.'   Ms Chan revealed that the college is in a 'trial period' during which some of the lower form subjects, such as Social Studies in Form One, History, E.P.A and Geography in Form Three, are taught in Chinese.

  'This is our tentative attempt to gauge the effect of using Chinese as the medium of instruction.

  'So far, we've observed that the students are more eager to engage in discussion as the subject content appears to be more related to their daily life.'   She added that such response was especially obvious with subjects such as Social Studies and Travel and Tourism.

FACT FILE BACKGROUND The school, founded in 1982, belongs to the the Church of Christ in China, Hong Kong Council. The college is a co-educational secondary school. There are 1,150 students, 54 full-time teachers and 21 auxiliary staff.

HEADMASTER The principal is Miss Annie Chan Kit-ching who holds a B Soc Sc, Dip Ed and MA (CU) degrees. Miss Chan has 10 years of teaching experience.

TEACHING LANGUAGE Students are taught in both Chinese and English. Putonghua is taught in Form One.

ACTIVITIES The college offers academic, service, interest, arts and sports groups and clubs in various areas for the students, like English, scouting, JPC, chess, drama and table-tennis.

SPORTS Students are encouraged to take part in all ball games.

FACILITIES The college has 26 classrooms, an integrated science laboratory, a chemistry laboratory, a physics laboratory, a biology laboratory, two computer rooms, an assembly hall, a music room, a covered playground, a basketball court, a badminton court and a library with 10,945 books. Field trips are organised for Geography and Biology.

SCHOLARSHIPS Best HKCEE Scholarship and Kei Long Scholarship.

PREFECTS There are 75 prefects who are headed by Tin Lai-yin.

SCHOOL MOTTO 'To know the truth, to seek true liberty and to serve the community' is the motto for the school.
