Rainbow Tam Yuet-mei, now 28, was walking along Peking Road in Kowloon on June 14, 1990, when a car driven by Ng Sang struck her from behind. College employee Ng was later convicted of careless driving at South Kowloon Court, according to the statement of claim.

Ms Tam spent 10 weeks in hospital. Two years later, she needed more surgery when plates and pins were removed from her legs.

Her right leg is now 1.5 centimetres shorter than her left and her ankles are damaged. She also suffered scarring on her legs, it was claimed.

The woman, who used to be a track athlete, claimed she had been forced to give up all sports. A former sales assistant, Ms Tam is now unemployed because she cannot stand for more than three hours without pain.
