TNT Express Worldwide is stepping up its European operations with the opening of new depots in Turkey, Norway and Britain.

TNT said the expansion was needed to meet growing demand and it formed part of its strategy to make further inroads into the European market.

'With the opening of the new depots, TNT can now offer to all shippers even greater access to Europe's burgeoning markets,' said Adrian Hall, country general manager for Hong Kong.

The Norwegian market is buoyant after several years of depressed growth, with TNT reporting a 37 per cent rise in freight volumes compared with last year.

The company has moved its Oslo depot and offices to larger premises at Oslo airport to cope with the rapid growth, and to upgrade customer service.

In Britain, the company is opening a US$2 million depot at Croydon to serve London's Gatwick airport and the Channel Tunnel, as part of a major investment and expansion programme.
