STAC Electronics, makers of the Stacker disk compression software popular among PC users, has begun shipping ReachOut Remote 4.0.

  As a remote control and remote access tool, ReachOut supports Windows and DOS, FTP's TCP/IP stack and high-resolution monitors. It can be bought as either a modem product or a network product and does not require any modification to Windows' system files such as WIN.INI and SYSTEM.INI.

  The ReachOut File Manager is built around the standard Windows File Manager and supports drag-and-drop between local and remote systems.

  It sells for US$199 for the modem version and US$295 for the network version.

  MICROCOM and Rockwell have developed enhancements to the Microcom Networking Protocol Class 10 (MNP 10) which promises to improve modem performance over circuit-switched cellular networks.

  The new MNP 10 Enhanced Cellular technology offers several benefits including a higher ration of initial modem connections, quicker initial connections, backward compatibility with both the original MNP 10 standard and LAPM, a greater call completion ratio, and faster data throughputs.

  Early tests show that MNP10 Enhanced Cellular connects up to 25 per cent better than ETC and can achieve 30 per cent higher throughput rates.

  The new standard works with Rockwell's new digital signal processors called Enhanced Cellular data pumps.

  SOFTWARE AG has announced its Open Data Warehouse initiative, a program of integrate products and services for creating and maintaining a data warehouse.

  A warehouse is designed to provide the tools and facilities to manage and deliver complete, timely and accurate business information to authorised individuals. The Open Data Warehouse Program offers a choice of off-the-shelf, custom and semi-custom products and services brought together by Software AG.

  The components include data analysis and modelling, data administration and management, data extraction, scrubbing, storage and transfer, along with platform integration. Support services include warehouse modelling, integration services, data cleansing and data house-holding.

    NEC has introduced the Versa V series of colour notebook computers which offer extensive docking options.

  Among the features of the notebooks are the choice of 9.5-inch dual scan passive matrix or thin film transistor active matrix displays, accelerated local bus video, SL-Enhanced i486 DX2 50-MHz processors, 250-MB hard drives expandable to 540 MB, four MB of RAM expandable to 20 MB, and two PCMCIA Type II slots.

  In order to make the new notebooks attractive as a desktop alternative, the on-board video supports up to 1024 x 768 resolution and the Docking Station II provides a Plug and Play ready docking solution with two ISA slots and three drive bays.

  A Versa V with four MB of memory, a 250-MB hard drive and the dual scan display sells for US$21,300.

  CLOSE on the heels of its recent DeskJet price reductions, Hewlett-Packard has announced it is lowering the price of its DesignJet plotters. The HP DesignJet 600 monochrome plotter and the DesignJet 650C colour plotter in both D and E sizes have had their prices reduced by between seven and 15 per cent.

    DATA storage system maker Memorex Telex has announced a new set of client-server products, providing comprehensive solutions aimed at companies moving onto an open systems platform.

    The new products include an enterprise server, the 8650SOpen Systems Host; a network ready device, the Client Server Terminal; and a new family of client workstations, the Celerria 486-and Pentium-based personal computers.
