I HAVE a retired Mac SE that could have a more useful life if it could receive and print faxes automatically. All the software I know of requires the user to open and print received faxes by command. Do you know of one that will do it automatically, in either foreground or background? VINCENT CHOW Kowloon Global Fax, a program that comes bundled with Global Village fax/modems, is one program that does what you want. The application has a little box in its Preferences section that, if checked, will make the program automatically process and print incoming faxes.

How much use you would get out of this feature is, however, debatable. I use my PC at home to receive faxes, but I never use the auto-print feature in my software. If I did it would mean having to leave my printer as well as my computer on permanently, something I do not want to do.

Besides, I get many junk faxes, and not using the auto-print feature allows me to get rid of these beastly documents by simply deleting them from my hard disk; no paper wasted printing them out.

Why don't you do the same? Software such as Delrina Fax PRO (from the company that makes the popular WinFax PRO for PCs) can alert you when faxes arrive so you can check them straightaway.

Delrina Fax PRO also has a decent optical character recognition engine that can convert faxes into text that can be edited on a word processor, although I'm not sure how well that would work with an old Mac SE. I HAVE been using System 6.0.7 on my Macintosh for a long time. I never bothered to upgrade to System 7 because I read some bad reports about it.

However, I am thinking of upgrading now. Should I move from my existing system to System 7 or jump straight to System 7.5? JONATHAN CHOW Wan Chai System 7.5 has been out for awhile and is a very stable operating system. There is no reason for you not to upgrade straight to it.

Apple's System 7.1 was considered somewhat unstable, but the system has been improved on considerably.
