GUANGDONG will invest about 400 million yuan (about HK$364 million) in a move to extend its pager roaming services to the entire province as part of its 10 billion yuan investment plan to upgrade the telecommunications industry this year.
Cui Xun, deputy director of Guangdong Posts and Telecommunications Administration (GPTA), said that the service, which covers the Pearl River delta, would be extended to the whole province by the second half of this year.
He said that plans were afoot to extend the service across the country by next year, at the latest.
Mr Cui estimated that the project would cost between 300 million and 400 million yuan this year.
To pave the way for a national pager roaming service, telecommunications authorities are working on a data communications network which will make the plan feasible.
Pager roaming is a service that allows customers to use pagers or mobile telephones to make and receive international calls while away from their subscriber base.
