CAN you guess who are America's top music performers? The leading contenders include artists such as Janet Jackson, Mariah Carey, Michael Bolton, and Pink Floyd. Cable Television's YMC Channel blasts off to a great start in Chinese New Year with a special presentation ceremony - the 22nd American Music Awards. As part of its Chinese New Year celebrations, Cable TV will be bringing Hong Kong viewers live coverage of the event tomorrow, from 9 am. Cable YMC Channel manager Hugo Kwong Wai-ming said: 'We aim to import excellent world class music programmes for our viewers. 'The American Music Awards, and similar kinds of music programmes, will be well received by Hong Kong's young adults.' The live broadcast of the American Music Awards is one of three top international music ceremonies Cable YMC Channel will be bringing to viewers. The Grammy Awards and the World Music Awards would be seen on the channel in March and May, respectively, Mr Kwong said. The Cable YMC Channel emphasis is on music with lively and energetic programmes reflecting the lifestyle, habits and values of Hong Kong's younger generation. 'The aim is to bring intelligent enjoyment to young people in the territory, so our channel offers a wide range of youth programmes from overseas, and some locally produced ones,' Mr Kwong said. The channel is also planning to produce 'alternative' music programmes for its viewers. 'We hope to promote and produce 'alternative' music programmes such as Chinese rock 'n' roll, which will be different from other music programmes made by other channels,' he said. The channel had the challenge of shaping and guiding young people in the right directions, and intended to spread 'positive' messages in its programmes, he said. 'We are dedicated to impart 'healthy and positive' messages through music, lifestyle and interactive phone-in programmes.'
