A BATTERY shaver that men will want to use and women will want to give them is Philips' promise in its new Philishave HS 190.

  'It has an ergonomic design so it fits perfectly into the hand, and it's very slim for a battery shaver,' product manager Fanny Mak said.

  'This is who we are targeting - the busy executive who travels often.'   Ms Mak said she also expected that the attractive looks of the shaver, which had an elegant chrome finish, would encourage women to buy it as a gift for their Valentines.

  'Apart from being stylish, it has a shaving performance that no other battery models can give,' she said.

   It was the only battery-operated shaver that had the double-action blade system, she said. This was normally available only with rechargeable models.

  'The double action is that there are twin blades; the first one will lift up the hair and the main blade will cut it deeper than would just one blade,' she said.

  Another special feature of the Philishave HS 190 was its microgroove shaving heads.

  'This is a precision-cutting groove in the middle that gives a closer shave,' Ms Mak said.

  Usually, the thinner shaving head was in only high-end, rechargeable Philips models.

  These two features combined to give a very close shave, she said. That closeness was enhanced by a third design element.

  'The shaver has individual floating heads to give a closer shave, again, and more comfort because it follows the contours of the face,' she said.

  Like all Philishave models, the HS 190 had a system that sharpened the blades as they were used.

  This gave them an effective lifespan of five to seven years, which compared favourably with other brands, Ms Mak said.

  Designed by an Englishman and miniaturised in Japan using Dutch technology, the HS 190 has won two prestigious design awards in the United States, from ID Design, and in Japan.

  The HS 190 retails for $423.
