YEEEE Haaa! Let's hear it for the best thing to have come out of Beijing since Faye Wong: Country and Western, Sino-style. Not content with having put together two breakthrough Beijing Reggae albums, entrepreneurial music man Jeffrey Cheen is currently working on a first C&W album from the Chinese capital. And the star of this venture? His oldest son's girlfriend. Zoe, as she is known, is a powerful singer with a classical training in the erhu, but that didn't deter freelance A&R man Cheen from what he admits is an attempt to cash in on Beijing's latest craze. 'The most popular radio programme for the past seven months has been the American Country Top 20,' explained Cheen. Say no more. He has already got started on the album, which (like Beijing Reggae will be released through Golden Pony in Hong Kong), and has enlisted the help of Nashville-based John Bieland and Brian Cadd, guitarist and keyboardist respectively from the Flying Burrito Brothers who flew into town last week en route to Guangzhou and the recording studio. Cheen has also got clothing sponsorship for his protege - courtesy of country's teen wonder, Tanya Tucker, who will sponsor 22-year-old Zoe's cowgirl look with her recent signature fashion line. Of the 10 tracks on the album, eight will be Nashville covers and two originals from Bejing. They will be sung in Putonghua and Cantonese.
