China Holiness College 170 Wai Wai Road Shamshuipo, Kowloon CHINA Holiness College is introducing moral education in their junior form syllabus to help the all-round development of students.

  The school decided to offer the new course to Forms One to Three students because of what it saw as the lack of family education in modern society.

    'There are more and more broken families in Hong Kong. Sometimes parents concentrate on their work and may not be able to spare time for their children. We believe that schools and teachers should take the responsibility to do something about it,' said principal Fung Sui-hing.

  The subject makes use of a more systematic approach to spread positive messages to students and help them understand their ability and potential through class activities and discussions previously run during school assemblies.

  The first-year content of the course concentrates on ensuring a smooth transition from primary to secondary school. They hope this will increase students' interest and confidence in learning.

  'We hope to let them understand more about themselves and know how to develop their potential,' Mr Fung said.

    'The standard of our students is wide-ranging in terms of their academic ability. We don't push them to attain a certain pre-set standard, but encourage them to make progress.'   Teachers are encouraged to maintain a close relationship with students.

    'We care about our students as though they were our brothers and sisters, or even children.

  'We do not discriminate against those who don't do well, but care for them, build a good relationship and encourage them to learn and improve.'   Mr Fung said that students were getting younger and teachers might have to adapt their ways of teaching to meet changes.'       A couple of years ago the school started running a special programme for first formers to introduce secondary education to the students and help them adapt to school life.

  The school has recently bought 21 computers and converted an ordinary classroom into a computer room where a half-class receives practical hands-on training.

  The school not only offers classes to students taking HKCEE on computer studies, but also practical training covering data-processing and word-processing.

  The private school is considering becoming a private independent school or a direct subsidised school in the year 2001.

  'We have to make the decision in about 1997 or 1998. It is quite likely that we will become a subsidised school,' Mr Fung said.

Fact file DESCRIPTION The Christian co-educational secondary comprehensive school was founded in 1976. There are 480 students while the staff comprise 22 full-time teachers and eight auxiliary staff.

PRINCIPAL The principal is Mr Fung Sui-hing who holds BA (HKU), Dip Ed (CUHK) and MEd (Yr 1, HKU). Mr Fung has 13 years' teaching experience.

TEACHING LANGUAGE Students are taught in Chinese and English in all forms.

ACTIVITIES The college offers a wide range of activities for students. They are divided into services, joint school activities, clubs and interest groups.

SPORTS Students are encouraged to take part in basketball, athletics and table-tennis.

RECREATION Recreation facilities include a basketball court and an assembly hall. Students interested in singing or music can join the school choir, recorder band or harmonica band.

FACILITIES The college has 11 classrooms, six special rooms and an integrated science laboratory, a chemistry laboratory, a physics laboratory, a biology laboratory and a human biology laboratory. Field trips are organised for Geography and Science.

PREFECTS There are 40 prefects who are headed by Chan Chi-kuen and Lau Tung-wa.
