RESIDENTS of the Nationalist strong-hold, Rennie's Mill, will have to choose between receiving up to $727,000 compensation or nothing at all, under the latest government clearance arrangements.

The Government warns it would rather hold back the Junk Bay new town development than make further compromises with the residents, should the revised offer be rejected.

About 12,000 Home Ownership Scheme and rental flats, a planned Mass Transit Railway extension, and other community facilities included in the Junk Bay development will have to be cancelled if the clearance cannot go ahead.

The new package allows a domestic household about $288,000 compensation, while business operators will be paid about $727,000.

On top of the cash compensation, which has been raised by almost 40 per cent since the previous arrangement last July, families and operators will also be paid a removal allowance of up to $8,790 and $73,000 respectively.

It will cost the Government $972 million under the new arrangement to clear the 53-hectare site.
