TSING YI was invaded by mice at the weekend - not the furry rodent but those irrepressible robots of Hong Kong's engineering schools.

Known as micromice, they came for the increasingly popular annual Micromouse Championships at the Hong Kong Technical College.

Students designed an 'intelligent' robot to navigate its way through a maze.

But the competition is far more than fun and games. These mice are sophisticated robotic tools, combining various elements of artificial intelligence, computing and electronic technologies, and simple mechanics.

Each mouse is designed to be able to 'learn' the shortest route to the centre of the maze. The fastest (and so the smartest) mouse wins.

This year's first prize went to So Siu-pun and Hui Wing-shun, who shared the Hewlett-Packard notebook computer.
