A government taskforce, chaired by Principal Government Town Planner Dr Ted Pryor, is expected to make a preliminary report to the Housing Branch within six months.

Secretary for Housing Dominic Wong Shing-wah wants to complete the review of housing policies for the next century by early-1997.

The existing long-term housing strategy was formulated in 1987.

The review's key objective is to update housing programmes. It also aims to re-assess the demand for public housing and allocate resources to those most in need.

The Housing Branch is understood to be keen on more forceful measures to solve the problem of much-needed rental units being occupied by better-off tenants.
