Glittering lineup faces judges

Athletics Maggie Chan Man-yee: Age: 19. Student. Hong Kong's leading female distance runner set 15 national records last year despite suffering from personal problems. The highlights were her national records in the 1,500 metres and 3,000 metres records set at last August's Commonwealth Games in Victoria, Canada. It is her first year in the senior awards having been a junior award winner from 1991 to 1993.

Wanet Chan Sau-ying: 24. Student. Hurdler Chan is the closest thing Hong Kong has to a world class track and field star and is ranked in the top four in the NCAA, where she competes for the University of Southern California. She holds the national record of 13.14 seconds, achieved twice last year, and had an excellent year in international competition, finishing fifth in the Commonwealth and Asian Games. Holds a world ranking of 47.

Badminton Emmy Chan Oi-ni: 28. Scholarship athlete. Hong Kong's top female singles player since the retirement of Chan Man-wa more than three years ago. Chan is the Hong Kong national champion and helped the territory to the bronze medal of the mixed team event in last year's Commonwealth Games. Last year, she also reached the quarter-finals of the Asian Championships and the semi-finals of the Brunei Open.

Basketball Wu Lai-fong: 25. Fire Services Inspector. Wong helped her team, Fire Services, to the Hong Kong Silver Shield Championship title last year and to second place in the national league. She was also a member of the Hong Kong team who finished fifth in last year's Asian Basketball Championship for women in Japan.

Yung Kam-wah: 23. Teacher. The Chinese-born Yung was part of the Suntex team who were runners-up in both the Silver Shield and the Hong Kong League. He was also in the Hong Kong squad who finished fifth in the Commonwealth Championship last year in Malaysia.

Bodybuilding Grace Lui: Student. Lui won a gold medal in the 52-kilogram category at last year's Asian Women's Championships in Dongguan, China. She also took part in the Asian Mixed Pairs and the Asian Pro-Am Classic events last year.

Bowling Chung Him: 36. Mechanic. Chung was part of the Hong Kong squad at last year's Asian Games in Hiroshima, although he was unable to win a medal. His best performance was first place in the men's doubles at the Far East Championships. He also scored third place in the men's fours at the Hong Kong International Open.
