JARDINE Technical Services (JTS) is a joint venture between United States air-conditioning equipment manufacturer Trane and Jardine.

  Before 1986, Jardine Engineering Corporation (JEC) was the distributor for another air-conditioning equipment company but, when JEC wanted to expand the distributorship into China, the principal only offered two provinces, which was not what JEC was looking for.

  At that stage, Trane was represented in Hong Kong by another company, but when JEC approached it for the China distributorship, Trane agreed to give it to JEC on condition Trane held 50 per cent of the shares of the new company.

  JTS was formed on December 24, 1985, and the service staff of JEC moved to the new company. JTS is now grouped under Jardine Air-conditioning (JAC) for management purposes.

  Trane was founded in 1913 as a company of engineers and innovators and it still operates two research and development laboratories - in Wisconsin and Texas.

  It is a leading manufacturer of heating, ventilation and air-conditioning equipment.

  In 1984, it merged with the US global corporation, American-Standard, whose philosophy was based on investing in state-of-the-art technology to set the standard for innovation and high-quality products.

  Trane has a long list of innovative products.

  In the 1920s, it revolutionised the heating industry with the convector as a replacement for cast-iron radiators.

  During the next decade, it launched a series of firsts in the air-conditioning industry.

    These included hermetic, direct-drive centrifugal chillers, packaged absorption chillers, packaged air-cooled reciprocating chillers and air-cooled centrifugal chillers.

  In the 1980s, Trane introduced a three-stage centrifugal chiller which has been updated to make it compatible with the latest environmentally-friendly refrigerants.

  Trane is now the largest supplier of centrifugal chillers, with more than 45,000 in use.

  Production has broadened to include building management controls.

  Trane has manufacturing plants in Europe and Asia.

  The name Jardine is well enough known in Asia.

  JTS specialises in providing technical services for electrical and mechanical installations in buildings.

  Although Jardine is in partnership with Trane, and JTS promotes Trane's equipment where appropriate, the services provided and the design and installation of replacement or refurbished equipment are not limited to items or systems from the American partner.

  Technical services include commissioning, servicing, maintenance, replacement and upgrading of HVAC systems, ranging from large-scale central plant systems in commercial buildings, to split type and individual window air-conditioning units in apartments.

  Predictive maintenance services are also available.

  The company carries out maintenance, modification and upgrading of fire protection systems, as well as routine testing to conform to fire regulations.

  Much of this work is inevitably undertaken out of normal working hours because the equipment cannot be shut down when the building is in use.

  Additional out-of-hours work is likely for technicians who are liable to be called out on emergency duty.

  Where appropriate, on-line checking of faulty equipment can be carried out using auto-dial modems and a Trend intelligent building management system.

  To back up JTS maintenance work, the company operates a spare parts depot in Shau Kei Wan.

  Although the Hong Kong Air-conditioning Parts Centre is a branch of JTS, it operates as a separate entity and may sell spares to any customer - even JTS's competitors.

  It holds a large stock, covering all the leading brands of air-conditioners, and claims it has no problem with obsolete or discontinued parts.

  Back-up facilities include a comprehensive library of spare parts manuals and an advanced computer system for inventory control.

  JTS operates in Hong Kong and has offices in Macau, Shenzhen, Xiamen, Shanghai and Beijing.

  JTS engineers and staff work full-time in China and they are supported by others who go there for particular projects.

  Technicians in these offices are mainland Chinese who have received training in Hong Kong.
