THE families of six Hong Kong residents killed in a plane crash are set to file a raft of legal actions against Russian airline Aeroflot, almost one year after the victims' deaths.

Lawyers in Hong Kong and London representing 20 families in the territory, China, Taiwan, Australia, Britain and Nigeria are gearing up to take on Aeroflot Russian International Airlines in a bid to win compensation.

All 75 passengers and crew were killed when Flight SU 593 plunged into a snow-covered hillside several hours after leaving Moscow bound for Hong Kong on March 23 last year.

The disaster has been labelled as one of the most extraordinary in aviation history after revelations the captain's 16-year-old son was flying the Airbus Industrie A310 when it crashed.

Cockpit transcripts and preliminary findings leaked to the Russian press show the boy was in the pilot's seat flying the plane when his father realised they were only seconds from disaster.

But Aeroflot and Russian aviation authorities investigating the cause have reneged on earlier promises to release a report on the crash.
