ANDY COLE cracked four goals as Manchester United kept up the Premier League title heat on Blackburn Rovers with the 9-0 thrashing of struggling Ipswich at Old Trafford yesterday.

  Cole led the United goal avalanche with Mark Hughes (2), Roy Keane, Paul Ince and an own goal from Frank Yallop completing the rout.

  It set a Premier League record, beating the previous 7-1 bests set by Blackburn against Norwich and Aston Villa against Wimbledon.

  United still trail Blackburn by three points after Rovers' vital 1-0 victory at Villa where Colin Hendry headed the first-half winner from a Jason Wilcox corner.

  But the afternoon belonged to United who were simply too strong for Ipswich.

  George Burley's side were killed off in the opening half as two goals from Cole and one from Roy Keane saw United storm into a commanding lead.

  An own goal from Yallop put United 4-0 ahead with Mark Hughes adding the fifth and sixth goals before a Cole double and an Ince strike completely demoralised Ipswich.

  Second-half strikes from Robbie Fowler and Ian Rush sunk Newcastle United 2-0 at Anfield as the battle for UEFA Cup spots hotted up.

  Everton had Vinny Samways and Duncan Ferguson sent off as they were held to a 2-2 draw at struggling Leicester.

  Swedish star Anders Limpar shot Everton into an early lead with a crisp 30-yard drive after Stuart Barlow had created the opening with Samways adding a second after being set up by Limpar.

  Samways was dismissed for an off-the-ball incident and then Ferguson went following a clash with Jimmy Willis with Mark Draper pulling a goal back for Leicester before Iwan Roberts grabbed a late equaliser.

  Les Ferdinand was another hat-trick hero as Queen's Park Rangers came from behind to beat Wimbledon 3-1 in the London derby at Selhurst Park.

  Dean Holdsworth gave Wimbledon an early lead but Ferdinand hit Rangers' equaliser with a 20-yard drive before second-half goals from Ian Holloway and Ferdinand killed off the Dons.

  Chris Waddle was the Sheffield Wednesday star as his 10th-minute goal beat Leeds 1-0 in the Yorkshire derby at Elland Road.
