HONG KONG man Daniel Chan Chi-pun, hanged at dawn yesterday for drugs trafficking in Singapore, was cremated in a brief ceremony attended by his father and friends.

A poem, written by 38-year-old Chan describing his plight since he was told in November he would be hanged, was read out during the service.

'It was a touching poem. It told how he had managed to cope through the help of God,' said a friend.

Chan's 38-year-old wife and his seven-year-old blind son were not at the service. 'It was too heartbreaking for them to go to,' said the friend.

The boy visited Chan in prison on the eve of the execution.

Chan's father, 70, was grief-stricken, but assured friends his only son would rest in peace.
