A PROPOSAL to slash the residency requirement for electoral candidates from 10 to three years has received a mixed response from major political parties.

Democratic Party vice-chairman Dr Yeung Sum said his party would decide its position after listening next week to the Government's explanation of the changes and the response of other legislators.

The party had planned to table a private member's bill to cut the residence requirement to one year if the Government failed to amend the legislation.

Dr Yeung said the Democrats would decide next week whether to proceed with their bill.

The Liberal Party, meanwhile, was more supportive of the Government's initiative.

Party vice-chairman Ronald Arculli described the new proposal as acceptable but said the Liberals had yet to finalise their position.
