Both Christensen and MacDonald go into the race with sterling credentials - and fully capable of breaking the men's and women's course records in this popular event raced over two laps around Central.

A few thousand spectators and millions of television viewers will witness the two-lap races which start and finish at Chater Road.

Christensen, who boasts a best mile time of three minutes, 59.91 seconds - the fastest time in New Zealand this year - has recovered from a bout of 'flu which forced him to miss the recent New Zealand Nationals. However, the 22-year-old is fit and ready to go as he will attempt to beat fellow New Zealander Phil Clode's course record of 4:07 set in 1991.

'I haven't raced in some time because I was recovering from 'flu. But I'm looking forward to the race and I'm going to get out and try to get a good run,' said Christensen, who is hungry for the $10,000 course record bonus.

'I've run on roads before and the race is going to be interesting. I'm feeling good and there's no excuses if I don't run well,' he said.
