HI-TECH goods manufacturer 3M China plans to double its mainland sales after it completes a major factory expansion in Shanghai.
3M China is targeting one billion yuan (about HK$917 million) in mainland sales when phase two of its Shanghai manufacturing plant comes into operation by the end of 1996.
Located in Caohejing, the phase two project covers floor space of 105,640 square feet. The company plans a variety of new production lines, including overhead projectors, pressure sensitive tapes, telephone cross-connect cabinets and fibre optic products. Its current range includes tapes, dental products and computer disks.
Its China region managing director, Kenneth Yu, said a good source of high quality raw materials as well as cheaper labour made China an attractive manufacturing base.
Mr Yu said the company earmarked infrastructure, telecommunications, construction and transportation as prime areas for investment and expansion.
'Our company will engage in direct investment in infrastructure building and telecommunication development. We will also provide the supporting materials needed in these developments,' he said.
