QUITE the happiest feature of the Urban Council elections was the success of Dr Ronald 'Please adjust your dress before leaving' Leung in slipping into an elected seat.
This seemed a big surprise, at least to me. I would have thought that having the improvement of local toilet culture in your election manifesto was a passport to disaster. Perhaps people are broad-minded about these things in Kowloon City.
The unhappiest feature of the whole exercise was the contest in Kwun Tong between Mrs Elsie Tu and Mr Szeto Wah.
I appreciate that for those who dwell seriously on the finer points of progressive politics this was a titanic battle between two alternative views of the future and what we should be trying to do with it.
For those of us, on the other hand, who cherish a general benevolence towards all candidates who clearly take seriously the idea of service rather than self-aggrandisement, the whole thing was a tragedy.
Mrs Tu and Mr Szeto have splendid and well-deserved reputations as stalwarts on the side of the oppressed and underprivileged. Nine-tenths of the population would have been very happy to vote for either of them. What were they doing running against each other? This must, I am afraid, lead to some critical thoughts about Mr Szeto, because Kwun Tong is clearly Tu territory.
