CHRISTIAN Dior has made its entry into the body-care market with a new slimming gel called Dior Svelte.

    It has garnered several awards, including the Prix d'Excellence de la Beaute, and been named one of 10 best products for 1994 by Fortune magazine.

  Dior Svelte cellulite control complex took about six years to develop, said advertising manager Bonnie Tang.

  The body-contouring gel is based on an optimum combination of four plant extracts.

  It is designed to melt away the fatty deposits under the skin that contribute to what is known as the 'organe peel' effect on thighs, hips and stomach.

  One of the main selling points for the new product is its fluid, non-oily texture.

   'Usually products with similar functions have a greasy feeling and may take a long time to massage in,' Ms Tang said.

  Dior Svelte could penetrate the skin quickly and did not need to be massaged in, she said.

  The gel contains hyaluronic acid that leaves the skin silky, soft and firm. As it is plant-based, it is suitable for sensitive skin.

   According to the company, laboratory tests on 300 women in Europe revealed that as much as 1.5 centimetres could be reduced from the waist and hips and 0.6cms from the thighs in two months.

   The gel helps to develop smoother skin, reduces puffiness and improves contours. Tests had been carried out in Japan with encouraging results.

   'The result was some drastic reduction in the size of the thighs, the hips and tummy and that makes us comfortable with the product,' Ms Tang said.

  'Dior Svelte should be used twice daily for slimming.'      After Dior Svelte is launched next month, two other products will be added to the series this year - a moisturising gel and a body scrub.

  'They will also have the Eau Svelte, which is a new concept of combining skin treatment with perfume in one bottle,' Ms Tang said.

   However, Hong Kong will have to wait until next year for this product.

  Meanwhile, Christian Dior has expanded its skin-care collection for the face.

   Four new products are being added to the Equite lines of cleansers, bringing the complement to 11.

    'The Equite line is designed to cater for different preferences and needs and to make the most of any skin type and age,' Ms Tang said.

  The new products in this line comprise two make-up removers and two cleansers for dry skin.

  One of the cleansers, Gentle Face Wash Gel, has a new formula.

   'When you squeeze it out, it is just like a clear gel but, when you dilute it with water and lather with your fingertips, it will turn to a milky emulsion,' Ms Tang said.

   The cleanser can be rinsed with water.

  The other cleanser is a soft formula that removes make-up easily and can be wiped off with a tissue.

  Dior's new Clear Water Eye Make-up Remover is also distinctive.

  Completing the new quartet in the Equite line is Waterproof Make-up Remover, a milky lotion.

  Next month, Dior will introduce a gel texture to the Hydrastar line of moisturisers that was launched at the end of last year. It is for all skin types and people of all ages.
