I HAVE always considered the Star Ferry the most civilised mode of transport in this city. I eschew the MTR in its favour for my many cross-harbour trips, despite the inconvenience of location at times.
But gone are the days of a leisurely stroll down the corridor and a quick look at the skyline before boarding.
Because of the installation of the red-green lights further up the passageway, one is now caught up in a stampede down the concourse, people pushing and running, children being dragged along on their little legs, drinks slopping everywhere. After this mad rush, one sits on board for three or four minutes until another ferry docks on the other side. Could the Star Ferry management enlighten us as to why their system of ringing bells and green lights, which encourages this madness, is employed.
In light of the Lan Kwai Fong disaster, should people be encouraged to charge along what is quite often a very crowded and slippery area? ANDREW GALL Mid-Levels
