COMPUTER hacking and an influx of pornographic materials on the Internet computer network at Hong Kong's universities have forced the institutes to take action.

The director of the Hong Kong Baptist University's Computing and Telecommunications Services Centre, Jerome Day, said the problem came to the fore last September when a hacker managed to break into the university's computer system through the Internet.

He then began firing off insulting messages to Internet users around the world, identifying himself as a university staff member.

He also gained access to other programmes that disrupted other users' computer activities.

'He was able to get into one of our computer systems because he was able to get our passwords,' Mr Day said.

'He would log into the Baptist University computer system and from there log on to a computer system in Scandinavia and from there log into the US. He would often use foul language or cause problems for other users.' He said the FBI had been alerted when complaints from the US were received. Later, Hong Kong police became involved.
