THE latest addition to the Hong Kong Shipping Register, a 29,195-tonne containership, was named Trade Maple at a ceremony in South Korea today.

Built by Hyundai Heavy Industries at its Ulsan yard, the 2,200-TEU vessel is owned by Hong Kong's Worlder Shipping.

The 185-metre long vessel will be managed by Wah Tung Shipping Agency Co.

Before leaving for Ulsan yesterday, Marine Director Ian Dale said he was pleased to see another quality vessel joining the Hong Kong Shipping Register.

A review conducted this month showed that in terms of tonnage Hong Kong is the 15th largest register in the world with total gross tonnage of more than 8.3 million.

'In less than five years since its inception on December 3, 1990, the Hong Kong Register has established itself as a quality register,' the marine director said.
