A HONG Kong building about to be demolished is hardly news. Nor is it unusual for the public to know little or nothing about its replacement - and for none to have challenged the demolition decision.
So it is hardly surprising that almost nothing appears to be publicly known about Cheung Kong's 'office and hotel complex' that will replace the about-to-be-demolished Hilton Hotel - despite the fact that the site is part of Central's only elegant, spacious urban area - Statue Square and its environs.
We must take on trust that the developers involved are not intent on erecting yet another building that will do more for company profits than aesthetics.
That the Hilton is being torn down is another matter.
Architectural masterpiece it may not be - yet a building of quiet elegance, and of its times, it certainly is.
Could the Government unequivocally state what height the new building will rise to? Will it be more than a few stories higher than the present hotel? EDWARD and GWENNETH STOKES Lamma Island
