ORIGINALLY seen as an above-average sprinter, Foursome added extensively to his reputation by winning over 1,400 metres last time out and trainer Steven S. L. Leung has every reason to hope that his rising star will do it again next week.
Foursome is entered for the Martell Medaillon Handicap over 1,400 metres and if connections needed any encouragement they got it yesterday when the horse worked quite excellently for claimer Alex K. S. Yu.
Foursome worked with Diamond Fortune - also improving - and Sky Coast and was clearly in very good heart.
Without blinkers or a visor last time, Foursome settled particularly well under the gifted hands of American ace Gary Stevens but young Yu, who had his first winner with Link Treasure on Wednesday night after just three rides, also got on well with him yesterday.
The distance was also a major factor at his last start and the manner in which Foursome won was enough to suggest he could do it again. That view was merely reinforced with this effort where, in a sharp hit-out, he was clocked in 46.8 (22.7).
The second race today could turn out to be the hottest and most exciting griffin event of the season so far and French trainer Patrick Biancone, under pressure to hold on to a narrowing lead in the championship, will have Deauville turned out in peak shape.
