Blackmail conviction overturned

A RETIRED civil servant jailed for masterminding a plot to blackmail his girlfriend was freed yesterday after the Court of Appeal quashed his conviction.

His daughter Ng On-kee, 26, and her boyfriend Lam Fat-oi, 22, were also cleared of taking part in the blackmail of bank employee Yu Hui-le, 31, for $200,000.

Ng Chor-wan, 52, was sentenced to 18 months' jail last June.

Ms Ng and Mr Lam were sentenced to eight months and 18 months respectively.

Mr Justice Litton, Mr Justice Bokhary and Mr Justice Liu said although much of the evidence supported Ms Yu's version of events, too many things were 'left up in the air'.
