TRAFFIC congestion could be eased through better bus services that lured people out of their cars, an international coach operator said.

Scottish-based Stagecoach Holdings, which wants to bid for routes taken from China Motor Bus (CMB) this year, said people were more willing to travel on buses if the vehicles were comfortable and clean.

The firm lost to Citybus in the franchise battle for 26 CMB routes in 1992.

Stagecoach has unveiled a fleet of six double-decker buses for the new 802R route from Yi Shing Square in Sha Tin to Central.

The new route complements the 801R from Pok Hong Estate, Sha Tin, to Central.

'We are the first non-franchised operator operating the double-deck air-conditioned vehicles,' said the firm's director, Timothy Archer, adding that the vehicles' engines were environmental friendly.
