Survey looks at jetties

1-MIN READ1-MIN

ENGINEERS are to inspect 100 piers and jetties after a smaller study last year found several in appalling condition.

The survey, starting today, will cover many new piers after technicians last summer were shocked by the state of new government-owned jetties.

Taywood Engineering executive Dr Gordon Anderson said structures barely three years old 'showed significant defects', with cracking and crumbling concrete.

Teams of specialists will take core and drilling samples to assess what kind of repairs are needed to halt the decay caused by water penetrating the concrete and corroding steel reinforcements.

Among the facilities included are Queen's Pier in Central and public jetties in Wan Chai, Tsim Sha Tsui and Tsuen Wan.

None of the structures is thought to be in danger of imminent collapse.
