MORE than 200 people gathered in Tsim Sha Tsui yesterday calling for more action to control the huge number of obscene comics. Earlier the Democratic Party collected signatures at MTR stations soliciting support for its campaign to control the comics. The party said the proposed amendments to the Obscene and Indecent Articles Ordinance did not go far enough. The amendments failed to define 'pornography' and provide a clear distinction between indecent and obscene articles, the party said. It called for the adoption of a three-tier classification like that for films. Books or comics classified as category three should be locked inside news-stands. It also said the Television and Entertainment Licensing Authority should be empowered to seize obscene comics and a team should be set up to patrol news-stands. The law should also be amended to require publishers to submit their books to the Obscene Articles Tribunal on the date they were published.
