RECORD companies are being asked whether they want three local TV stations to join preparations for a Hong Kong-style 'Grammy' music awards. About 30 companies, including Polygram and Warner, have been contacted on whether ATV, STAR TV and Cable TV, should join a working committee that consists of Commercial Radio, TVB, RTHK and Metro Broadcast. Both RTHK and TVB are opposed to ATV's membership, since it has no experience of music awards. Ms Carrie Law Ka-wai of Commercial Broadcasting said: 'Our position is to invite all free on-air electronic media including ATV to join us.' But TVB's external affairs controller Poon Kai-tik said: 'ATV is not being ignored, but ATV has never run music awards before. How can we accept ATV?' Record companies have been asked whether they would support the awards and whether four existing awards should continue. Carl Chang Shing-sheung, spokesman of the committee and general manager of Commercial Broadcasting, said a decision on the awards would be reached by June.
