AMERICA'S First Lady, Hillary Clinton is to be congratulated for drawing attention to the need to improve the lives of women and children during her trip to India (South China Morning Post, March 30).

The plight of women in particular, in many of the countries that she is visiting in southern Asia is greatly worsened by their inequality under the law.

Rape and abuse in custody are common, and in countries such as Pakistan and Bangladesh, the plight of women so abused is even worse as once subjected to such treatment, they are then at risk of imprisonment for the offence of zina - extra-marital sexual relations.
