A VERDICT is expected this week in the case of Wang Jianye, the former section head of Shenzhen's Planning Commission accused of corruption, his family said.
He was extradited from Thailand in September 1993 to face eight charges involving US$2 million (about HK$15.4 million).
Wang's wife, Zhang Ying, said she feared her husband would be sentenced to death even though it would mean a reversal of an assurance given by Guangdong prosecutors when he was extradited.
'Four different channels told me that the verdict [of guilty] and death sentence would be announced within the week, in the coming two or three days at the earliest,' Ms Zhang said yesterday.
Reports by the Shenzhen Government and the media hailed Wang's arrest a victory in the corruption crackdown.
According to a document obtained by Ms Zhang from Thailand, two officials from the Guangdong Provincial Procuratorate assured the Thai authorities Wang would not face the death penalty in China.
