A ROW has broken out between Hongkong Telecom and the monetary watchdog over the ubiquitous $10 coin which is jamming an increasing number of phones.
Hongkong Telecom has temporarily barred public phones which accept coins and credit cards from taking $10 coins while modifications are carried out.
Both sides blamed each other for the dispute with Hongkong Telecom saying 'inconsistent specifications' in the manufacture of the coins have caused the problems.
'There are inconsistencies in the width, diameter and material of the coins,' a Hongkong Telecom spokesman said.
But the Hong Kong Monetary Authority said Hongkong Telecom had not properly calibrated its public phones.
'If there are problems with the coins why don't the KCR and MTR have the same difficulties in their ticket machines,' said an authority spokesman.
