I AM a keen reader of George Adams' books, because I find that they give a true picture of Hong Kong life and help me to improve my English.
I was shocked to discover that the Urban Council public libraries do not pay him anything for the number of people who borrow his books.
I have seen, for example, that one of his books has been borrowed 27 times since it came out.
Why does the Urban Council have 40 copies of his books? People will not buy the books if they can borrow them so easily.
Dr Adams' books are actually quite cheap, less than the cost of a compact disc, and there is no excuse for people not buying them. The Urban Council should set a good example to everyone else in Hong Kong and recognise that authors are as valuable as film stars and pop singers.
Perhaps they are more valuable. But how can they survive if people are allowed to read their work and they receive nothing in compensation? D. W. M. LIU Tuen Mun
