HONG Kong will host its first international programme for gifted youngsters in conjunction with the 11th World Conference on Gifted and Talented Children this summer.

Forty young people from Hong Kong aged between 12 and 16 will spend a stimulating week with 70 other gifted children from 30 countries during the 1995 Gifted Youth Programme between July 29 and August 4.

With the theme 'Stepping into a Smaller, Wider World', the programme aims to give participants a better understanding of the global community and of other cultures and values.

The one-week programme features social gatherings, visits and group activities led by professional educators.

'We would like to develop their potential through different kinds of activities and training and at the same time promote the image of Hong Kong,' said Mr Rex Li Yip-fu of the Gifted Education Council. Mr Li is organising committee chairman of the programme.

'Gifted children are often seen as having an advantage in life and needing no further help to succeed, but this is not true.

'It is important that they are nurtured in the right way so that their talents can be fully utilised to benefit society,' Mr Li said.
